NGS Education supports educators and students in learning about the world and how it works, understanding the interconnectedness of the earth’s systems, and cultivating empathy for all who inhabit it. The Education department also includes the Museum & Experiences team, which oversees the Washington, D.C. museum and store as well as traveling exhibits.

National Geographic develops and tours multiple photography exhibitions that are available for lease to museums, art galleries, and other venues. National Geographic also tours large scale traveling exhibitions. This position supports the Director of Museum Operation and Planning and will manage National Geographic traveling exhibitions. This position also manages the logistics and planning to convert NG headquarter exhibits into traveling exhibitions. The Manager of Traveling Exhibits is responsible for operations, crating, shipping and storing exhibitions that are available to museums and other venues for lease.
Your Impact
Responsibilities
Sales and Client Relationships (45%):
Manage primarily North American traveling exhibitions, host venue inquiries, contracts, invoicing and client relationships through the exhibition planning process including host venue design, marketing approvals, shipping, logistics, staffing and travel arrangements for installations, and de-installations.
Assist with International venues for exhibitions when necessary.
Collaborate with Director of Museum Partnerships on coordination of venue scheduling and logistics as well as trade show preparation and planning.
Logistics (45%):
Manage all logistics for North American exhibition tours including planning, crating, shipping, and storage of exhibitions as well as timely disposal and termination of retired traveling exhibits, as well as related logistics.
Manage the installations and de-installations of all traveling exhibitions and related programming.
Provide on-site art handling and condition reporting of NG and lender artifacts as needed.
Oversee the functional status and aesthetic appearance of exhibition components, providing direction to the internal team and contractors.
Work closely with the Creative Team and the Production Manager in production of new traveling exhibitions, and to ensure updates to existing exhibitions on tour, to include but not limited to copy and data updates, photo reprints or repairs, re-framing, and exhibitory component refurbishments, etc.
Ensure all updates and sizes are correct before shipping out. Ensure host venues are satisfied with condition of exhibition. Continue to iterate as necessary throughout the tour of the exhibition. Be proactive about planning for future updates.
Reporting, Archiving and Budgeting (10%):
Manage client invoicing and assist with forecasting for future budget planning.
Consistently gather and report on data from host venues to include visitor data, press mentions, installation images, etc.
Assist Director of Exhibitions Planning to manage the file storage for current and retired traveling exhibitions, seeking to fill in any gaps when/where files are still needed from Creative team or host venue clients, and ensuring all available data is backed up.
Produce wrap up report of each exhibition tour.
What You’ll Bring:

Educational Background
Bachelor’s Degree – Museum Management Degree or related or professional experience.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
5+ years of museum exhibition management, traveling exhibition experience preferred.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
Self-starter with great organizational skills, project management, and people skills with a positive attitude with proactive approach
Extensive knowledge of and experience in museum exhibitions, and traveling exhibits sales
Ability to quickly assess and analyze workflow for optimum execution of plans
Ability to manage multiple projects in various stages of development and creatively problem solve
A strong aptitude for tools and standard construction practices
Comfortable working at heights, either on a ladder or a mechanical lift
A basic computer fluency
Ability to travel for projects is required
Excellent communication, both written and verbal
Desired Knowledge and Skills
Ability to operate a forklift
Comfortable working with heavy objects
Familiarity with A/V, electronic and mechanical principles and techniques
