Job Description
Reporting to the Senior Team Leader of Culinary Development, this Program Manager will lead product development for sweet and baked goods from ideation stage through launch companywide. The SPM will work in step with the Senior Team Leader of Culinary Development to execute category strategies and Enterprise development to ensure the highest quality food with an eye towards cost, labor efficiencies, and food safety standards.
This position requires the ability to establish and maintain exceptional business relationships with various Regional and Global Stakeholders including Category, Procurement, Marketing, and Exclusive Brand Teams. The SPM candidate is highly articulate, with strong active listening, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present and discuss complex information with Senior and Regional Leadership.
Responsibilities
Be Research and Development lead on cross functional teams responsible for product development within the specs assigned by supporting teams
Provide technical leadership in formulation, benchtop development, and support of third-party suppliers during commercialization process
Develop and design new and improved products in accordance with Whole Food Market’s ingredient standards and within the scope of our core value
Develop and implement technologies and support both new product and ingredient development
Identify areas of opportunity in raw materials and/or product design for cost optimization
Perform and lead a variety of activities associated with program development, including basic research of emerging ideas and trends, recipe testing, development, recipe creation and submission with required documentation
Develop all supporting documents and tools to ensure successful and replicable launch of program across all stores.
Understand customer trends and keep focused on competitive landscape.
Be the ambassador of food quality, culinary craftsmanship and igniting the passion for food in our team members and customers.
Qualifications
Minimum 7+ years working in a Bakery field, with 5+ years in R&D or product development.
Strong understanding of bakery manufacturing expectations and limitations
Proven ability to complete projects according to outlined scope, budget, and timeline. Able to deliver results in a fast paced, lean, deadline driven environment and balance multiple changing priorities
Experience working in a cross-functional large organization environment a must.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Self-starter and proactive problem solver with strong work ethic. Takes ownership and responsibility over assigned areas, ready to jump in and support team to accomplish company goals.
Creative, resourceful, can think outside the box to create innovative solutions
Expert level knowledge of baking, decorating, pastry, various preparation techniques and bakery equipment.
Expert knowledge of the science behind scratch bread and patisserie.
Strong sense of urgency, with the ability to pivot and reprioritize
Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
Demonstrates passion for the customer experience.
Knowledge of allergens, labeling, recipe accuracy, weights and measures, supplies and packaging
Strong understanding of alternate diet baking (ex. Vegan, Vegetarian, Paleo, Gluten Free)
Project management skills with ability to prioritize multiple activities simultaneously
Excellent knowledge of WFM policies, mission procedures, Core Values, business philosophy, and quality goals.
Ability to work mornings, nights, weekends, holidays and long/unusual hours as needed.
Flexible to travel as needed
Passport and legal status to leave the United States
Minimum leadership level of Team Leader required
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
Ability to bend, stoop, grasp objects, and climb ladders.
Ability to bend and twist neck and waist, reach above and below shoulders, and squat.
Ability to bend and lift loads, not exceeding 50 pounds; ability to push and pull carts not exceeding 100 pounds.

Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals.
