The New York Times is seeking an Engineering Manager, reporting to the Director of Engineering, Games, to join the NYT Games team in our Standalone Products Group. NYT Games is a highly collaborative team that combines exceptional Product Development with our existing and new puzzles and games to create a delightful and compelling experience for our users. The Games team is growing quickly and is looking for leaders who are ready to execute on its ambitious vision.
The iconic New York Times Crossword has existed in print for 77 years, and now has over 800,000 subscribers to our world-class digital solving experience across web, mobile web, Android and iOS devices. We are at the cusp of an exciting time as we begin to think about building a platform for our web and mobile games across a single codebase, and continue to invent, test and produce new digital puzzles and games to reach an even broader audience of users seeking accessible yet challenging diversions.
How We Work
We push code to production on a regular cadence and optimize for speed of delivery without compromising on quality. We generally build APIs in Go, web applications in Node.js, and web front-ends in React with accessible, semantic HTML and SCSS, and use a mix of Swift, Objective-C, Kotlin and Java in our native apps. We’re hosted almost entirely on Google Cloud Platform.
Engineering Managers are responsible for creating a culture and processes that keep developers happy and in the flow as they work. We support Engineering Managers in this role by providing:
Management and professional development training and coaching offered in-house
Reimbursement for self-directed management training off-site
Monthly all-managers meetings and roundtables to share knowledge and learn from peers
As an Engineering Manager on NYT Games you can expect to:
Lead a cross-platform team of 4-8 engineers, ranging in career level from new engineers to technical leads
Help drive innovation and technical growth in the team
Develop people and teams through coaching, mentoring and feedback
Hire and grow a diverse and talented team of engineers
Work closely with product owners, project managers, and other partners to ensure we deliver compelling puzzles and games
Represent engineering needs when determining the product’s roadmap
Help establish and advocate for engineering best practices
Work with other managers throughout the organization on cross-team initiatives and projects
About You:
You are passionate and enthusiastic about what you do and rely on that to motivate members of your team
You use strong listening skills and open-ended questions as tools to coach your engineers
You advocate and facilitate continuous improvement and learning
You have experience managing web or mobile engineering teams
You have the ability to adapt and handle multiple competing priorities
You understand the core technologies and engineering challenges facing web and native app development
You are an excellent communicator and have strong interpersonal skills
This role may be based in NYC or remote in certain US states
