Job Description
The Editorial Interactives front-end developer collaborates with designers, developers, editors, and producers to create visually rich features connected to magazine stories and enterprise multimedia projects for newyorker.com. This person will help to develop new techniques for interactive storytelling and will have the opportunity to work with New Yorker writers and artists on a wide range of story genres—humor, culture , politics, science , and investigative reporting . This is a guild position and reports to the Interactives Director, but is managed day-to-day by the Editorial Interactives Senior Designer/Developer.
Develop design files into responsive Web experiences and incorporate editorial feedback.
Experiment with different techniques for interactions, animations, motion design, and user flows to create visually rich components for interactive stories.
Create sketches and develop prototypes to quickly communicate ideas.
Support and collaborate with developers on the team, as well as freelance developers.
Develop and maintain a front-end component library (React) and internal development tools.
Participate in team stand-ups, contribute to sprint planning sessions, and collaborate with teammates to review the department’s work.
Brainstorm and pitch ideas for interactive treatments by reading manuscripts for New Yorker stories and reviewing other media.
Research and learn new coding languages or technologies as needed.
Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.
Skills and Qualifications:
B.A./B.S. in computer science, or equivalent practical experience.
At least five years of experience developing digital projects in an editorial environment.
Demonstrable fluency in modern front-end Web development, including proficiency with client-side JavaScript and CSS. Experience with component-based frameworks is a plus.
Experience with THREE.js, Pixi.js, or other JavaScript drawing libraries is a plus.
Some experience with back-end development, such as Node.js, Ruby, or PHP.
Experience collaborating on cross-functional teams, which include journalists, designers, and engineers.
Ability to realistically scope project requirements and timelines.
Ability to develop projects independently and collaborate with other developers as needed.
Experience working with multimedia, including animation, audio, video, still images, and text.
Exceptional visual sensibilities that demonstrate a solid understanding of layout, typography, and UX design.
Experience working with component-based design systems.
Proficient in standard design software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Sketch, Figma).
Excellent engineering habits, which include writing well organized code and documentation.
Proficiency with version control (Git) and code reviews.
Fastidious attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills.
Strong editorial values and appreciation for the style and standards of The New Yorker.
Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
